Why is the Indian government taking fatty liver seriously?

Last content review 2026-09-23

The short answer

India incorporated NAFLD into its national non-communicable disease framework in 2021. The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has since developed and revised guidance for identifying, preventing and managing fatty liver through the country’s wider NCD services.

What is happening?

Fatty liver shares risk factors and care needs with diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia and cardiovascular disease.

Integrating NAFLD into NP-NCD allows prevention, risk identification, referral and ongoing care to be connected with services that already address those conditions.

The Ministry released initial integration guidance in 2021 and describes NAFLD interventions within the NP-NCD 2023–2030 framework.

Why does this matter?

The policy recognises that fatty liver is not only a specialist liver-clinic issue; it is connected to common conditions already managed in primary and community care.

National guidance can help health workers use a more consistent approach to prevention, early identification and referral.

What does the evidence say?

The Ministry’s NP-NCD 2023–2030 Operational Guidelines state that NAFLD interventions were included within NP-NCD after operational guidelines for integration with the earlier NPCDCS programme were developed and disseminated in 2021.

The Ministry’s 2024 training material connects NAFLD care with prevention, assessment and management of wider metabolic risk. Programme details can change, so the official Ministry website remains the authoritative reference.

Key takeaway

India treats fatty liver as part of its national NCD agenda because liver and metabolic health are closely connected.
